Butt Implant Revision: What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery

Butt augmentation is meant to leave you feeling great from every angle. When your results fall short, whether from a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) that lost volume or from implants that shifted, rippled, or never looked quite right, it can be overwhelming disappointing and frustrating. The good news is that disappointing results can often be corrected.

At his Beverly Hills and Los Angeles practice, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Ryan Stanton, the “Butt King®,” performs butt implant revision for patients who want the shape, symmetry, and comfort they originally had in mind. Here is what the process looks like from your first consultation to your final results.

Is Butt Implant Revision Right for You?

Patients seek revision for many reasons. The most common include:

  • Implants that have shifted or are poorly positioned
  • Infection or fluid accumulation
  • Scar tissue tightening around the implant
  • Rippling or visible implant edges
  • Uneven or asymmetrical results
  • Changes in the way implants look after weight gain or weight loss
  • Dissatisfaction with the volume or shape from a previous BBL or implant surgery

Fat grafting can lose volume over time, and while implants offer lasting enhancement, placement matters. Implants placed in the wrong plane can lead to visibility, sagging, or shifting. Revision surgery is designed to address those problems with a plan tailored to your anatomy and goals.

If you’re wondering about timing, Dr. Stanton generally recommends waiting at least a year after your original procedure, so your results have time to settle, unless a complication calls for earlier attention. If you’re experiencing pain, asymmetry, or other concerns, don’t wait. Early evaluation can keep a small problem from becoming a bigger one.

What Will Your Consultation and Preparation Be Like?

Your journey begins with a consultation, where Dr. Stanton listens to your concerns, examines your results, and talks through what you’d like to change. Come prepared to discuss your history. It helps to bring:

  • Your complete medical history and a list of current medications and supplements
  • Any details you have about your previous surgery, including the type of procedure, where it was done, and what implants were used
  • Photos that show the shape and proportions you’re hoping for
  • Your questions and concerns

Together you’ll decide on the best approach. Revision surgery is highly customized, and Dr. Stanton may recommend one or more of these techniques:

  • Repositioning implants into a better plane, such as moving them from on top of the muscle to a dual-plane placement, to reduce visibility and rippling
  • Capsule management, which means removing or releasing hardened scar tissue to restore comfort and shape
  • Implant replacement with Dr. Stanton’s patented Stanton Anatomic® implant for more natural contours
  • Volume enhancement by combining implants with fat grafting in a “supercharged BBL” for a fuller, more sculpted result

In many cases, Dr. Stanton can remove and replace implants in the same procedure. Sometimes a two-step process is the better choice, and he’ll explain which approach makes the most sense for you.

To set yourself up for smooth healing, plan to be at a stable weight before surgery. Dr. Stanton also advises patients to stop smoking at least 4 to 6 weeks before butt implant surgery and to stay smoke-free during recovery, since nicotine reduces blood flow to healing tissue and raises the risk of complications. If you’re traveling to Los Angeles for your procedure, our team can help you plan your stay.

What Happens During Surgery?

Butt implant revision takes place under general anesthesia at our fully accredited on-site ambulatory surgical center, with a board-certified anesthesiologist monitoring you throughout. Because it’s an outpatient procedure, you’ll go home the same day, but you’ll need someone to drive you.

Dr. Stanton typically works through incisions placed in the midline crease between the buttocks, where scars blend in naturally. Depending on your needs, he may also place incisions along the curve where the buttocks meet the upper thigh. Most patients have no visible scarring on the buttocks after healing.

Revision can be more complex than a first-time procedure, depending on the complications and tissue changes involved. That’s why experience matters. Dr. Stanton has performed more than 800 butt implant surgeries and designed the Stanton Anatomic® implant himself, so he understands both what can go wrong and how to correct it.

What Can You Expect From Recovery and Results?

Recovery takes patience but knowing what’s ahead makes it easier.

  • The first couple of weeks: Expect swelling, bruising, tightness, and discomfort, along with prescribed medication to keep you comfortable. Plan to take about two weeks away from work. During this time, you’ll need to protect your implants from direct pressure. Dr. Stanton will give you detailed instructions for limiting sitting, including using a specialized cushion and resting on your stomach or side.
  • Weeks 2 to 8: You’ll wear compression garments and attend follow-up visits as directed. Many patients find kneeling forward into a chair or working in a reclined position helpful in the early weeks. Strenuous activity should be limited for 6 to 8 weeks, and Dr. Stanton will tell you when it’s safe to ease back into exercise.
  • The months that follow: Swelling and bruising can hide your results at first, but they fade gradually over the first few weeks, and your contours continue to refine as you heal. Results aren’t instant, so give your body the time it needs.

Throughout recovery, Dr. Stanton and his team are available to answer questions. If anything feels off, such as increasing pain, asymmetry, or signs of infection, call us right away.

Ready to Fix Results That Fell Short?

You don’t have to settle for a result that doesn’t feel right. If you’re unhappy with a previous BBL or butt implant surgery, Dr. Stanton can help you understand your options and build a plan to get the full, rounded shape you’ve been after.
